SOMERSET, KY. – SOMERSET, KY. – Western Kentucky University (WKU) and Somerset Community College (SCC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University Center of Southern Kentucky this week.
The University Center of Southern Kentucky will give students in and around Somerset the opportunity to earn their full bachelor's degree locally without having to move away from home. Students can complete their associate degree at the Somerset Community College and thencomplete their bachelor's degree with WKU.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Western Kentucky University and now take our collaboration to the next level. Together, we are able to offer students more opportunities than ever before,” said Carey Castle, president, and CEO of SCC. “This collaboration along with the other partnering universities continues to demonstrate our main focus of student success.”
The current types of programs offered through the University Center of Southern Kentucky are in hybrid or online format. The WKU (hybrid) programs include Bachelor of Science: Science and Mathematics Education with double major in either: Middle Grades Mathematics or Middle School Science. The WKU (online) programs include Bachelor of Science: Computer Information Technology, Bachelor of Science: Engineering Technology Management, Bachelor of Science: Organizational Leadership, Master of Science: Biology. Additional programs from WKU will be added to the University Center offerings in 2020.
The partnership makes earning a four-year degree more accessible. Under the agreement, students complete half of the degree at SCC’s tuition rate and the other half of the bachelor’s degree from WKU, allowing an affordable bachelor’s degree from a four-year university close to home.
A library MOA was also signed so University Center students will be able to utilize the Learning Commons on the SCC’s Somerset campus. Students also will have access to WKU’s admissions, registration, and academic advising staff from SCC’s campus.
"WKU has a long-standing partnership with KCTCS schools throughout our region, so we are excited to partner with Somerset Community College,” states Dr. Beth Laves, Associate Vice President, Extended Learning & Outreach for Western Kentucky University. “WKU is committed to serving our community and increasing access to rural parts of Kentucky. As a member of the University Center of Southern Kentucky, we will work with SCC to offer hybrid, on-site and online degree completion programs to the Somerset community and help students reach higher!”
