Barren County students will have the opportunity to show off their creative and problem-solving skills during a competitive event in December.

Topper Hacks is a competition for next-gen innovators and entrepreneurs grades 5-9 to share their art, digital media, and software/ product development skills through a series of practical challenges.

Western Kentucky University in Glasgow and BC Skills are partnering with WKU Computer Science within the WKU School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and Appfire to host the event.  

BC Skills Project Manager Justin Browning says that Topper Hacks is an opportunity for students to put their skills to work.

“Students today are actively learning how to address real-world challenges and find solutions, ” said Browning. “Topper Hacks will challenge students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. We are excited to partner with WKU to bring this unique competition to our students.”   

Participants will compete in a series of challenges and practical applications including app design, website design, logo creative design and a BreakOut Edu digital competition.

Winners from each category will receive a prize sponsored by WKU School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and all competitors will be entered into a drawing for a Nintendo Switch. Winners will be announced during the Family Coding Night at the Innovation Zone on December 5 at 5:30 p.m.

Topper Hacks takes place Thursday, December 5 at WKU in Glasgow from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Transportation and lunch will be provided. Students must apply to be considered. Students will be selected by a WKU panel and notified by November 20. Participants and their families will be invited to an announcement event at WKU in Glasgow in late November.
