Glasgow, Kentucky –WKU faculty and staff recognized the Glasgow Business & Professional Women’s (B&PW) Club at an event on Thursday, April 25 at WKU in Glasgow. WKU recognized the members of the club for the lasting impact the B&PW has made on WKU higher education within the region.

Over 30 years ago, members of the B&PW discussed the idea of raising funds to support a library at the Glasgow Campus. A committee, chaired by members Golda Walbert and Ladean Hamilton, coordinated a massive fundraising effort which raised $100,000 within a year. The funds were used to establish an endowment fund to support a library at the Glasgow campus.

A long-time member of the Glasgow B&PW, Davie Greer was active in the fundraising efforts. “Our club has always been interested in helping our community, and we were proud to do this for WKU,” said Greer.

Greer said that the entire community got involved in the project, with local individuals and businesses donating anywhere from $1 to $10,000.

“This community is very proud to have the Glasgow Campus here, so we took on his project as a labor of love.”

This fall, WKU will expand on the foundation started by the B&PW, launching the Learning Commons.

“This type of learning space is the new trend in higher education,” said Stephanie Prichard, campus outreach coordinator at WKU in Glasgow.

“Students want an engaging, comfortable space for individual and group study, as well as resources that support their academic success,” she said.  

Dean of Libraries at WKU Susann deVries said that the Learning Commons at Glasgow will provide a space that everyone can utilize.

“The Learning Commons at Glasgow will serve as an intellectual hub where students, faculty, and staff will gather to share ideas and engage in active learning,” deVries said. “We are thrilled to continue to partner with WKU in Glasgow as the library space is transformed.” 

Prichard said this will include a variety of resources, quiet study areas, computers & printing stations, open workspaces and reading nooks, as well as space for students to work collaboratively. 

“It’s fitting that we pause and officially commemorate the hard work and support of the B&PW as we expand what they began into a space that will help students grow and learn,” said Prichard. 

The Learning Commons will open this fall and will be located in the library space at WKU in Glasgow. WKU also has plans to partner with the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library to increase student access to library resources.

WKU in Glasgow is administered by the WKU Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO). DELO is the outreach arm of WKU, offering credit and noncredit programs to students of all ages and interests. DELO is made up of units that partner with WKU faculty and departments to offer convenient, flexible WKU learning opportunities to the citizens of Kentucky and around the world.
