The Kentucky Folklife Program Archives is a rich repository of materials documenting the folklife of Kentucky's people. Recently transferred from the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort to WKU's Kentucky Building, the Archives is now part of the Building's Manuscripts & Folklife Archives unit. To celebrate this move and to showcase the collection's depth and diversity, the Kentucky Museum and Manuscripts & Folklife Archives have developed an exhibition featuring fifty representative photographs selected from the thousands of images housed in the collection. We are excited about adding this rich resource to our research collections.

We are pleased to announce JOINT auditions for two children's theatre shows this upcoming Thursday, September 12th!  Auditions will take place from 4:00 - 6:00, but we will keep auditioning until everyone has had a turn if we have a big turnout.  Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving around in, and come ready to have fun and bring your sense of play.  If needed, there will be callbacks the following evening (Friday, September 13th) during the same time slot.

The Frog Prince
By David Mamet

Directed by Lena Buechler

(Note:  those individuals involved in Comedy of Errors will not be eligible.)

The Frog Prince is a smart take on the classic Grimm's fairy tale.  A prince, engaged to be married, goes out into a field with his servingman to pick flowers for his bride.  Unfortunately for the prince, however, the field is owned by a strange old sorceress. She turns him into a frog for his lack of consideration for others and the fault of not turning the flowers back over to her.  The spell can only be lifted when, "a pure and honest woman of her own free will shall plant a selfless kiss upon [his] lips."  The frog, with his loyal servingman's assistance, makes his home in the forest and begins to woo a kind-hearted and down to earth milkmaid.  Finally, he receives his kiss and returns to human form, but under bittersweet circumstances.  The Prince has lost his royal title and his riches, the milkmaid's kiss came just before she left to join her fiance, and the servingman's life has been lost to the perils that lie outside the forest.  In the end, however, the prince's final transformation from frog into a man again is greater than the first.  He has embraced humility, learned compassion, and now appreciates the value of loyalty.  Contrary to other takes on this story, the prince's story is more about these lessons than it is about romantic love.

Auditioners ought to have read the script that is located in both green rooms.  The director is looking for actors who can bring the dialogue to life, and who can also infuse it with comedy, movement, and creativity.  All actors (The Frog Prince, especially) ought to have a strong sense of comedic timing and a good grasp on the language and rhythms of the play.

Arkansaw Bear

By Aurand Harris - Directed by Jamie Norton

Saddened and bewildered at her grandfather's approaching death, Tish runs to her "special tree." There, in a world of fantasy provided by her wish on a star, she meets the world's greatest dancing bear. He is old, like her grandfather, and is running away—from death. In trying to help him, she begins to understand the meaning of both life and death, which helps her to cope with her own sadness. The play blends realism and fantasy, pathos and humor. It is delightfully theatrical, with music, magic and dance, and enthusiastically applauded by children's audiences and family audiences. Cast of 6.

Auditioners should come ready for cold reads and ready to play. The director is looking for actors who are willing to make bold choices and capable of finding humor between the lines.

The Magrath sisters have had a rough life, and it’s getting rougher – Lenny spends all her time taking care of other people with no one to care for her, Meg’s had a nervous breakdown, and Babe... well, Babe just shot her rich and powerful husband.  Somehow they have to figure a way out of their past and present messes into a more promising future. Join us for this classic dark Southern comedy about three sisters finally starting to figure out what they want and maybe, just maybe, how to begin getting it.
