Jessie Schartung, March 2013
What is your name and academic area of study?
My name is Jessie Schartung. I am a senior graduating in May with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Criminology. I plan to pursue a Master's degree in Sociology in the fall at WKU.
What inspired you to seek a college education?
In 2008, I began my journey with no intention of going further than obtaining an Associate's degree and ended up earning two. Admittedly, I cried for several days straight after receiving them. While completing a Human Service degree at OCTC, I had the amazing opportunity to do an internship at Owensboro Day Treatment. It was there I fell in love with the opportunity to help others! I looked into eyes that were once mine and I truly learned I believe in people I don't even know. I reached the kids on a personal level and I left every day so proud. I began my undergraduate degree at WKU-O in fall 2011, to continue my life-long desire to help others. When coming to WKU-O, I narrowed my field of study to Sociology with a minor in Criminology. I wanted to work with juvenile delinquents and at-risk youth. I knew my calling and the passion in me, I couldn't deny!
What would you say your motivation for succeeding is?
I am a single mom to an amazing 7 year old boy named Cody! He is my world! He gives me the strength and the constant smiles to remember to take life lightly, and to try with everything in you. He, too, doesn't believe in the word "impossible". He is my greatest strength! We are a good pair. And, we are going places!
Do you have any academic achievements you would like to share, and what are some of your possible career goals?
Carrying a 3.96 GPA, I have excelled in all classes throughout the course of my studies, craving knowledge and devouring material to best prepare me for the field. This year I received the "Outstanding Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Student of the Year". I am on the Executive Leadership Team with Volunteerism in Progress. In May, I am graduating with honors in Golden Keys, Alpha Kappa Delta, and Phi Kappa Phi.
In as many words as you would like, please tell us a little about yourself. (This can be anything you would like to share. Examples may be family, hobbies, interesting characteristics, etc.)
Anyone that knows me knows I have crawled rock bottom on bloody knees before returning to college. After that journey, I then stood strong, with many hands helping me up, and I have not stopped! I have proven to myself and the world that anything is possible. Today I am proud! I have an amazing life, drive and spirit! I have been given another chance and I'm running with it! I look forward to doing more "hands on" in the field allowing me to make a difference and I will pay forward the opportunity to lift others up from the cracks! I cannot wait to open more doors using my education and life experiences.
