Competency-Based Education

Competency-Based Education

What is Competency-Based Education?

Competency-based education curriculum is designed with the focus on individualized learning outcomes, as adult learners are guided to demonstrate competencies. Each student moves through the modules at his or her own pace.

Students acquire knowledge and demonstrate skills by engaging in learning exercises, activities, and experiences that align with clearly defined programmatic outcomes. Students receive proactive guidance and support from faculty and staff. Learners earn credentials by demonstrating mastery through multiple forms of assessment at a personalized pace.

In traditional education, the length of the course is a constant and student learning is a variable. Competency-Based Education turns this around so that your learning is the assured constant and the time it takes for you to achieve is the variable. You can move through modules or assignments that measure knowledge and skills you already have quickly, or take weeks/months to work on mastering new knowledge and skills.
