This film showing is the fifth and final installment of the Tracing the Unexplored: Brazil's Multicultural Society series. Waste Land, a social documentary, is based around the lives of garbage pickers at the largest landfill in the world, located at the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Here the Brazillian artist Vik Muniz, rooted in New York, decides to make a difference and travels there with the intention to help the pickers improve their lives by using the garbage they collect to express themselves artistically.
