Wednesday, October 1st

A Symposium on Peace

  • Location: Augenstein Alumni Center
  • Time: 7:00pm - 10:30am

This conference brings together academics, practitioners, policy influencers, and Muslim thought leaders to discuss the potential strategic role of Islam in American security policy and initiatives. It focuses on the role of “counter-narratives” or the attempt to respond to the ideology of militant groups, and is especially interested in how this may apply in the war against al-Qaeda.

The overarching aims of this conference are two-fold:

 •     To bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts, along with an interested public, to share their work, build partnerships, and construct “next steps.”

 •     To examine both the strengths and shortcomings of the counter-narrative initiative, as well as the ethical questions that are involved.

Whitewashing the Color Politics: The "Unfair" Construction of Beauty for the (Market) Beast

  • Location: Faculty House
  • Time: 4:00pm - 5:30pm

A fixed definition of beauty tied to pale skin has been reinforced and perpetuated globally by the expanding cosmetics industry and omnipresent commercials. A 2011 report of the World Health Organization reveals that women (and some men) of quite a few countries of the world use fairness products on a regular basis. Dr. Gitiara Nasreen will explore different dimensions involved in skin-whitening product commericals. Based on textual analysis of relevant TV commercials, secondary data, and the author's experience of campaigning against whiteness products in Bangladesh, this presentation reveals the complexities of ad narratives in a globalized cultural context.
