Job Description

This position is an internship experience with the Sherwin-Williams Company’s Coil Coatings Division’s Research and Development team, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In this role, interns will be immersed in hands-on laboratory work, partnering with their manager and members of assigned project teams in order to gain experience in real-world R&D methods and projects. Responsibilities may include providing general laboratory support and assistance, administering and maintaining laboratory processes, and performing various research procedures.

  • Provide support to Technicians, Chemists, and Scientists within assigned Research & Development Group.

JCAC Metro Office of Family Safety- Advocate Intern

ROLE

Assist victims of domestic violence navigate through the judicial process; obtain safety and stay safe through the filing of Orders of Protection and Safety Planning; and connect with community resources.

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct Needs and Danger Assessments on victims who participate in intakes, and refer them to appropriate partner/ community agencies for needs such as housing, shelter, food, employment, childcare, high-risk review, warrants, legal advice, counseling, etc.
  • Create individualized Safety Plans with all victims in JCAC and court, and provide DV education to clients via the Power and Control Wheel
  • Assist victims in obtaining Orders of Protection
  • Coordinate with the District Attorneys and Victim Witness Coordinators regarding victims in the JCAC
  • Educate victims and their families regarding the domestic violence, the cycle of violence, and the Power and Control Wheel
  • Escort victims to and from the JCAC and court
  • Make follow-up calls to victims who have recently visited JCAC to ensure they’re safe and don’t need additional services
  • Perform administrative duties like answer phones and collect statistical data

 TIME COMMITMENT

We require interns to commit to a minimum of one (1) semester and at least 15-20 hours per week.

  • Experience/Education: Ideally looking for student majoring in Construction Management, Management with an interest in the Construction field.  Basic understanding of architectural drawings preferred. 
  • Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and PDF Review.
  • Reasoning and Development: Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables and excellent grasp of process management.
  • Mathematical Development:  Ability to add, subtract, and divide all units of measure.  Ability to compute percentages, interest, profit and loss; basic statistics, ability to read and use graphs/charts and general algebra.

Work Assignments

The Mill Maintenance Department is responsible for the redesign, maintenance specifications, and repair of equipment in the mill. A Maintenance Superintendent leads the area department; the Co-Op would be mentored by one of the department Mechanical Reliability Engineers.

Work Programs

During the course of the program, the Co-op will be exposed to all aspects of reliability engineering in the mill. Our pulp and paper mills consist of equipment pertaining to the different Engineering disciplines such as: Thermodynamics, Dynamic Machines, Heat Transfer, Machine Design, and much more.

The following is a list of tasks that the Mechanical Reliability Co-Op will be expected to perform:

  • Orientation
    • Company orientation and review work rules
    • Tour of mills to familiarize Co-op with work area and process
    • Review mill safety rules and procedures
    • Introduction to various mill departments
    • AutoCAD orientation, drafting
    • Work primarily with one engineer on various assignments

The Manufacturing Engineering CO-OP directly supports the manufacturing process technology initiatives for the laundry detergent, fabric softener, blow molding, and injection molding business for Henkel.   • Generate, document, and execute a plan to select and/or develop technology including managing dynamic timelines, in order to meet the projects specific objectives.

  • Communicate effectively the status of the work to appropriate parties in order to keep them informed and involved

  • Works on cross functional teams for cost reduction projects. Projects could be uptime improvement, scrap reduction, labor reduction, material flow improvement, product engineering changes, or reduction in operational costs.
  • Improves machine performance by observing causes of stoppages and developing solutions, determining the correct machine parameters to centerline the machine, and analyzing performance data to determine root cause of failure, speed loss, and quality issues.

Requirements

We farm 1000 acres of row crops, have 130 cow herd - both spring & fall calving on 500 acres of pasture.  We feed some of our own cattle & sell to Tyson.  I occasionally feed cattle in Neb or KS.    Oldest daughter Marie just graduated from Iowa State & took a job with Monsanto.  Youngest daughter Renee is Sr. in high school.  Renee shows Shorthorns, Simmental, Hereford, Red or Black Angus and crossbred heifers at state & national level.  I AI ~ 60 cows per year, & put in ~20 embryos via local vet.  Goal for summer 2018 is put in 50 embryos & AI ~ 40 head.   Wife Carol is high school teacher with dairy background.  Our farm is staffed by 2-4 part-time helpers in spring & fall mostly college students & my retired neighbor that drives the semi.  I also have a railroad car unloading / cleaning service for ag related products that keeps us busy at least 1 day per week.  

Our 2018 plan is to break & make show or sale ready half dozen baby calves.   Renee needs show barn help for 5 show heifers.  I need help with my AI & ET goals - setting up recipes, heat detection, and herd health on commercial cow herd.  We do not ride horses but do ride Hondas.  Renee has 3 junior national cattle shows on the schedule for 2018, Angus, Hereford, & Simmental.

Pay is $400 / week, we work till dark usually but do not start till 8AM, but if you need a weekend off - no problem.  Lodging is free in upstairs of our house in room next to Renee with sharing a bathroom.  We also have a hunting cabin that is nice.  It is in the middle of a cow pasture & somewhat remote & creepy if you do not like coyote howling.  Most interns prefer staying with us.  Meals provided, although we do not have sit down type meals often, Carol just fixes something & the rest of us graze.  We feed hay, silage, corn by products, & non-conventional feeds (this week 4 tons of organic apple puree from a ship accident from Chile,).

One of your assignments will be write 2 blogs (3 paragraphs or so with pictures), an introduction blog, and a *what I learned* blog for a couple of grocery store chains' in Japan website.   I have been writing to them for 16 years & they enjoy reading blogs from a source other than Kent - especially interns.  Depending on what the translator does - you can see your writing in Japanese.  It is sort of cool to link to a Japanese food site & see yourself.  

The only rules we have are safety related; no drugs, no tattoos, no shorts while working, solid toed shoes, shirts with sleeves / short sleeves OK, no loose jewelry.  We strive to be safe & professional while emphasizing situational awareness.  You may bring guns, & show heifer.

STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Water/Wastewater Division – Project Management
Bowling Green Municipal Utilities seeks students currently enrolled in any engineering discipline, or construction management studies to fill one summer internship position. Civil engineering and construction management students are preferred. Typical schedule will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some flexibility. The internship will commence in June and is temporary in nature, ending on or before September 16, 2016.
Duties will include field investigations and data analysis. Strong computer and math skills are required. Activities, under the guidance of BGMU’s wastewater system Project Manager, will include:
1. Regulatory Compliance: Assist the wastewater Project Manager in compiling and assembling BGMU’s plan for responding to wastewater pump station power outages. Activities will include:
a. Collecting data from 59 wastewater pump stations, and
b. Preparing a summary document presenting:
i. Equipment present at each wastewater pump station,
ii. Additional equipment required at each station, and
iii. Equipment BGMU needs to contend with large scale power outages, And
iv. A guide for triage.
2. Wastewater Pump Station Odor Control Equipment Selection: Research options for managing odor control at an important wastewater pump station. Activities will include:
a. Meeting with vendors, and
b. Preparing a decision briefing, with recommendation, for the BGMU Water/Wastewater Systems Manager and staff for selection of odor control equipment.
A valid driver’s license is required. Candidates must be enrolled in a college or university in the preceding spring semester and the following fall semester. Offer of position is contingent upon candidate’s compliance with BGMU’s safety program, which includes training and drug testing. Positions may require work in enclosed areas with limited room for movement, in elevated areas, or in uncomfortably hot conditions. Some lifting and pulling may be required.

 Responsibilities

  • Generate, document and execute a plan to select and/or develop technology including managing dynamic timelines, in order to meet the projects specific objectives.
  • Plan and execute tests of new equipment and technologies to ensure products can be manufactured in the Sun Products Corporation manufacturing network.
  • Communicate effectively the status of the work to appropriate parties in order to keep them informed and involved
  • Serve as a technical liaison for all levels including production/maintenance and plant technical and management resources
  • Develops process documentation and trains personnel on new processes, materials and equipment
  • Works on cross functional teams for cost reduction projects. Projects could be uptime improvement, scrap reduction, labor reduction, material flow improvement, product engineering changes, or reduction in operational costs
  • Improves machine performance by observing causes of stoppages and developing solutions, determining the correct machine parameters in order to centerline the machine, and Analyzing performance data to determine root cause of failure, speed loss, and quality issues.

  6. Maintains and modifies the process control equipment’s Intranet over an Ethernet network.
  7. Organizes existing documentation and creates documentation of current processes (including but not limited to: CADD drawings, Flow Charts, Control Programs, Network Risers, etc.)
  8. Provides training to Operations and Maintenance personnel including the development of Standardized Work Instructions.   
  9. Continually seeks out improvement ideas that optimize operations, as well as, engineering procedures.
  10. Follows company policies and procedures including safety, quality and environmental.
  11. Performs other duties as required by business needs.
