NSF REU Program

Virginia Tech and the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) operate an international National Science Foundation (NSF) Research for Undergraduates (REU) site on the topic of Automotive Engineering in the USA and Germany. Summer 2018 will be the 8th summer of this program, I would very much appreciate your assistance in recruiting undergraduate mechanical engineering students from Western Kentucky University to our NSF REU program. We pay each student $5,000 and cover their travel and living expenses during this 10-week summer experience. German language skills are not required.
The faculty of mechanical engineering at the Technische Universität Darmstadt is top-ranked in Europe, with automotive engineering as one of their specialties. Their 30 faculty members perform more than $50 million in externally funded research per year, funding 430 doctoral candidates. This is truly a top-flight program for our students to work with.

Construction Estimator Internship

The primary role of the Estimator Intern is to assist with accurately forecast the cost, size and duration of a project. The Estimator Intern helps to develop the cost information that the executive team, Operations Managers, and the Estimator need to make informed decisions on the viability of a proposed new project. The Estimator Intern assists with providing market competitive estimates that align with organizational goals and objectives.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Assist with estimating project costs and maintain estimating database
- Perform a quantitative analysis of scopes
- Learn installation techniques, waterproofing, firestopping, and insulation systems
- Work with mentor to red, review, and interpret blueprint drawings

The Engineering intern will work within our engineering department to assist with surveying, project staking, and to possibly get some experience with GPS Automated Machine Control Management. Specific duties will include gathering data, reading and comprehending charts and graphs, compiling reports, as well as other duties. The chosen candidate would get a lot of field experience with supervision and direction from other engineers and managers. The chosen candidate would use computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. The chosen candidate must be ok with being outside for extending periods of time as a majority of our work is outdoors.


The ideal candidate would be a Sophomore or Junior and pursuing a Bachelor Degree within the Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or GIS programs. The ideal candidate would have completed a few civil engineering classes as well as survey classes.

Length of Internship

The intern would begin work on a part time basis in spring semester of 2018 as class schedule allows, work on a full time basis during the summer of 2018, and then work on a part time basis in the fall semester of 2018 as class schedule allows. We are hoping to bring someone on who could at least devote time to us for 2018 and 2019.

Beef Cattle related tasks
Support / management of 140 head beef cattle herd, 20 head show cattle herd, & 100 head feedlot.  Duties include daily feeding, check for health / wellbeing, heat detection; give injections associated with estrus synchronization of embryo recipients; monitor heat cycle of embryo recipe cows, synchronize esturs / observe heats for artificial insemination of replacement heifers & cows; daily hair care of 5 – 10 show heifers or show quality baby calves; process new born calves with vaccinations, ear tag, iodine navels; fence building & maintenance on new calving barn that is under construction; pasture management & fertility;  calf health protocols;  artificial insemination if intern wants to try;  assist embryo transfer veterinarian on ET day.  

Feed, Forage, & grain related tasks;
Operate tractor planting soybeans in no till environment.    Monitor development of hay fields & operate hay harvest equipment.  Operate upright silo equipment while unloading corn silage, assist in harvesting of cereal rye silage / storage in upright silo.   Load feed wagons with a diverse mix of corn & soybean by products from local grain processors.   Assist in small acreage wheat harvest that includes straw harvest for cattle bedding.  Become party to owners’ conversations regarding price negotiator of feed, grains, & fed cattle with packer buyers.

Other farm related tasks;
Assist in railcar loading / unloading of grain, feed, & fertilizer.  Write 2 blog entries for grocery stores & non GMO food interests in Tokyo Japan area – an “arrival” at Lock farm blog and an “exit” blog facilitated through translators that Kent Lock works with.  Become proficient with coyote eradication – being able to shoot a coyote with my high powered rifle when one is spotted in the cow pasture.  Plus a whole bunch of other cool stuff J

Passport encouraged, but not required, as there is some travel to Canada.

We farm 1000 acres of row crops, have 130 cow herd - both spring & fall calving on 500 acres of pasture.  We feed some of our own cattle & sell to Tyson.  I occasionally feed cattle in Neb or KS.    Oldest daughter Marie just graduated from Iowa State & took a job with Monsanto.  Youngest daughter Renee is Sr. in high school.  Renee shows Shorthorns, Simmental, Hereford, Red or Black Angus and crossbred heifers at state & national level.  I AI ~ 60 cows per year, & put in ~20 embryos via local vet.  Goal for summer 2018 is put in 50 embryos & AI ~ 40 head.   Wife Carol is high school teacher with dairy background.  Our farm is staffed by 2-4 part-time helpers in spring & fall mostly college students & my retired neighbor that drives the semi.  I also have a railroad car unloading / cleaning service for ag related products that keeps us busy at least 1 day per week.  

Our 2018 plan is to break & make show or sale ready half dozen baby calves.   Renee needs show barn help for 5 show heifers.  I need help with my AI & ET goals - setting up recipes, heat detection, and herd health on commercial cow herd.  We do not ride horses but do ride Hondas.  Renee has 3 junior national cattle shows on the schedule for 2018, Angus, Hereford, & Simmental.

Pay is $400 / week, we work till dark usually but do not start till 8AM, but if you need a weekend off - no problem.  Lodging is free in upstairs of our house in room next to Renee with sharing a bathroom.  We also have a hunting cabin that is nice.  It is in the middle of a cow pasture & somewhat remote & creepy if you do not like coyote howling.  Most interns prefer staying with us.  Meals provided, although we do not have sit down type meals often, Carol just fixes something & the rest of us graze.  We feed hay, silage, corn by products, & non-conventional feeds (this week 4 tons of organic apple puree from a ship accident from Chile,).

Carol & I place a high value on education.  Interns need to be BQA certified http://www.bqa.org/   If not - I will pay for your training if it works out time & location wise.  I just termed off the board of directors of IL Beef Assn where I was in charge of setting up BQA training in this part of state.  

One of your assignments will be write 2 blogs (3 paragraphs or so with pictures), an introduction blog, and a *what I learned* blog for a couple of grocery store chains' in Japan website.   I have been writing to them for 16 years & they enjoy reading blogs from a source other than Kent - especially interns.  Depending on what the translator does - you can see your writing in Japanese.  It is sort of cool to link to a Japanese food site & see yourself.  

The only rules we have are safety related; no drugs, no tattoos, no shorts while working, solid toed shoes, shirts with sleeves / short sleeves OK, no loose jewelry.  We strive to be safe & professional while emphasizing situational awareness.  You may bring guns, & show heifer.

We are looking for a winter / spring, and a summer (must stay through Aug 15) interns.

As an ATS intern you will be tasked with many different projects from day to
day. These projects vary from electrical schematic reading/wiring of a panel to
controls programming on a variety of different platforms (IE: RS Logix,

right out of school or shortly there after. We help to achieve this by assisting with resume /
recommendation letters as well as making ourselves available for references and interview
prep. If there is a certain hurdle that needs addressed we will assist with that as well.
We work as a group to help where we can as much as we can!

Job Summary

Water/Wastewater Division – Project Management
Bowling Green Municipal Utilities seeks students currently enrolled in any engineering discipline, or construction management studies to fill one summer internship position. Civil engineering and construction management students are preferred. Typical schedule will be 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some flexibility. 1. Regulatory Compliance: Assist the wastewater Project Manager in compiling and assembling BGMU’s plan for responding to wastewater pump station power outages. Activities will include:

i. Equipment present at each wastewater pump station,
ii. Additional equipment required at each station, and

2. Wastewater Pump Station Odor Control Equipment Selection: Research options for managing odor control at an important wastewater pump station. Activities will include:

Assist Engineers, under the direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, in developing, organizing, implementing and updating operational control processes and methods to optimize quality, cost, time, and effectiveness.  This will include providing support for the Quality department, Maintenance department and Operations depending on the task or project requirements.




  1. Assists Engineers in the design and implementation of continuous improvement and capital projects.
  2. Provides support for all Engineering functions where needed.
  3. Creates, modifies, and troubleshoots control programing for PLCs, HMIs, Visual Equipment, and Databases.
  4. Troubleshoots operational failures and create short term solutions to remedy causes as well as long term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
  5. Develops methods and standards of generating usable information derived from data, as well as, techniques to collect and organize data.
  6. Maintains and modifies the process control equipment’s Intranet over an Ethernet network.
  7. Organizes existing documentation and creates documentation of current processes (including but not limited to: CADD drawings, Flow Charts, Control Programs, Network Risers, etc.)
  8. Provides training to Operations and Maintenance personnel including the development of Standardized Work Instructions.   
  9. Continually seeks out improvement ideas that optimize operations, as well as, engineering procedures.
  10. Follows company policies and procedures including safety, quality and environmental.
  11. Performs other duties as required by business needs.




       At least a sophomore in good standing and enrolled in an Engineering Bachelor Degree program.

       At least a 3.0/4.0 GPA.


Pay rates start out at $18.00 for Sophomore status, $19.00 for Junior status, and $20.00 for Senior Status.

ExxonMobil LOFT Fellowship

ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest publicly traded International oil & gas companies, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowships in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for Hispanic college students. Through HHF’s Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) program, ExxonMobil seeks to nurture motivated college students across the country, with a passion for Engineering and Science. 

Selected students will be exposed to a top quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with one of ExxonMobil engineers/scientists to learn how their knowledge is applied in a corporate setting. 

Fellowship Components 
The Fellowship consists of five 1-hour meetings with a mentor (virtual or in person), participation in the Harvard-certified ExxonMobil mentee program (on-line), an exclusive curriculum to introduce Fellows to the organization and company career opportunities, and a $1,000 educational grant. In addition, there exists the possibility to interview for ExxonMobil positions (internships/full-time) upon successful completion of the Fellowship.

Assist Product Development team in automotive materials testing for Annual Automotive Product Validation.   

Duties include: collecting samples, testing according to documented standards and procedures, recording and organizing results, analyzing data and creating reports. 
Compare results to historical data and perform root cause analysis for identified differences. 
Communicate final results to upper management and product development team in formal presentation. Perform mid-term analysis of data and review with Automotive Engineer.

They manage the construction for all projects on campus for the WKU Student Life Foundation.  Currently they are starting work on the new residence hall which is being constructed on campus.  On the design side we do Architectural, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical design.   Currently they are looking for interns in the Construction Management, Architectural Design and Mechanical/Electrical Engineering fields.  They pay is $10 per hour to start and will work with students regarding their schedule (we allow part time work).  If you have any students interested in learning about the building design and construction industry, they will see all aspects of that at our office.
