She first began her nursing career working in various nursing positions in pediatrics, obstetrics, and outpatient nursing. Karen was honored to accept a position in Western Kentucky University’s nursing accelerated master in nursing education program which she completed from 2004 to 2005 and obtained her MSN in nursing education. Karen’s compassion for nursing education lies with critical thinking. As a research project, she created two online critical thinking sites to increase critical thinking skills among students and for faculty to share critical thinking techniques. In relation to this endeavor, she has created several case studies for the purpose of critical thinking, instead of an obvious outcome for case studies. In her lectures, she incorporates the Socratic Thinking method in order to stimulate advanced thought processes in nursing for her students. Karen’s compassion also lies in creating critical thinking questions for the exams she presents to the students with the composition of numerous nursing questions utilizing creative thinking techniques for the purpose of better preparing nursing students for the NCLEX, as well as for their nursing careers.

For community service, Karen has been a member with the Smoke Free Commission in her community for ten years and has been active with many community events supporting a smoke-free community. She also has been active with a youth group for the American Red Cross and assists with local blood drives. Currently Karen has recognition as a Certified Nurse Educator and holds membership with the National League of Nursing.
