: Bowling Green High School Students Win Public Health Video Contest

As part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of antibiotic resistance, the Masters of Public Health (MPH) capstone students from WKU’s Department of Public Health challenged local high school students to develop a video public service announcement to spread the message.  The winners of the video contest were a group of creative students from Bowling Green High School who worked with Mr. Matt Atkinson and Ms. Sandra McCoy to make a very informative video that can be viewed here.

On Thursday, December 8th, the contest winners received their prize: a pizza party, a $50 gift card, and a panel discussion about career possibilities in public health and health communications, as well as the services available to them through the local public health system. On the panel were Ashli Alford, Community Health Planner from the Barren River District Health Department who manages its website, social media accounts and marketing materials; Joseph McCarty, Vice President of the WKU chapter of the Kentucky Public Health Association and MS- EOHS candidate; and Zona Ascensio, Vice President of the Public Health Undergraduate-Graduate Associated Students and MPH candidate.  When asked why she felt it was important to reach out to high school students about the services provided by the health department, Alford said, “As public health professionals, we work hard every day with the intention of improving health outcomes in our community. We want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to utilize the resources that we provide for them.

The Department of Public Health would like to congratulate the students of Bowling Green High School for their excellent work. We appreciate their interest in public health and their willingness to help inform others about the fight against antibiotic resistance.
