Message from EVP Howarth and Staff Senate Chair Loftis - Staff Senate Request

I apologize for a second email to campus today, but I had the opportunity to meet with the Staff Senate, and Mike and I were asked to provide some clarification regarding essential personnel and working on campus.
First, offices are closed to walk-in traffic and non-operationally-essential personnel cannot be required to work on campus. The designation of “operationally-essential” is determined by division leaders, but include: our police force, some staff in shipping and receiving, some members of facilities management, and other limited but various positions across campus. If you are curious about your position’s designation, I encourage you to take your concerns up the line of report through your supervisor, supervisor’s supervisor, and/or division leader. If you need further assistance, you can follow up with Human Resources or with Staff Senate.
Secondly, we received questions about accessing buildings/offices and voluntarily working from campus. Based on guidance from our General Counsel, the Governor’s office, and public health professionals, staff should not be regularly working on campus (unless considered operationally-essential). However, no policies prohibiting accessing campus buildings have been established at this point. If needed, you may briefly access your office. If you do, please follow these guidelines:
- Coordinate with coworkers so that groups of employees are not in offices at the same time
- Maintain a distance of at least 6’ from each person you encounter
- Minimize the use of items that would be handled by multiple individuals (i.e. don’t print forms for signature or drop off items for coworkers to pick up)
As we continue to adapt to this situation, Mike and I appreciate your flexibility and willingness to raise concerns in order to best protect our Hilltopper family and beyond.
