Students from WKU Arabic Program represent U.S. in international debate competition

Three students from the WKU Arabic Program -- Savannah Gillam of Bowling Green, Jordan Miller of Villa Hills and Mollie Todd of Flemingsburg -- represented the United States at the International Universities Arabic Debating Championship April 8-12 in Qatar.

The students from the WKU Department of Modern Languages competed against teams made up of other native and non-native Arabic speakers from around the world. WKU students won debates with non-native Arabic speakers from Holland and the Maldive Islands. In one of the debates with native speakers, Mollie Todd was recognized as best speaker.

“The students got to use the language they are passionate about as well as the debating skills they acquired while training and preparing for this international event,” said Lhousseine Guerwane, instructor of Arabic at WKU. “The students made lifelong friendships with other college students from all over the world.”

The WKU students also toured Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera English channels in Doha, met with journalists and were welcomed by the general director of Al Jazeera Arabic in his office.
