Middle School Mathematics with SMED

Students who wish to declare a 730 mathematics major are initially designated as 730P (Middle School Mathematics Prep).  In order to be granted full admission into the 730 major, a student must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Completion of three of the following courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course:  MATH 136, MATH 183, MATH 205, MATH 206, MATH 302.
  • Have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 in all middle grades mathematics program courses completed prior to admission (MATH 136 and above).
  • Submit a Change of Major form to change from 730P to a 730 major.

A minimum of 32 hours of mathematics is required, along with a second major in Science and Mathematics Education (reference #774).  No minor is required.  All mathematics courses listed as prerequisites for other courses must have been completed with a grade of C or above.

Mathematics Requirements – 34 hours

MATH 136 (4 hrs); MATH 183 or STAT 301 (3 hrs); MATH 205 (3 hrs); MATH 206 (3 hrs); MATH 302 or 310 (3 hrs); MATH 304 (3 hrs); MATH 308 (3 hrs); MATH 403 or 323 (3 hrs); MATH 411 or 421 (3 hrs); MATH 413 (3 hrs); MATH 490 or 498 (3 hr).  Students must attain a grade of "C" or better in each course and must have a 2.75 GPA overall in the mathematics courses.

(MATH 183 - Statistics was formerly numbered MATH 203.  MATH 136 / 137 were formerly MATH 126 / 227.)

Science and Mathematics Education Requirements – 37 hours

SMED 101 (1 hr), SMED 102 (2 hrs), SMED 310 (3 hrs), SMED 320 (3 hrs), SMED 340 (3 hrs), SMED 360 (3 hrs), SPED 330 (3 hrs), SMED 470 (3 hrs), SMED 489 (3 hrs), SEC 490 (10 hrs), LTCY 421 (3 hrs)
The courses SMED 489 and MGE 490 (student teaching) are taken concurrently.  SPED 330 was formerly EXED 330.

Dr. Tom Richmond Elected to the Mathematical Association of America Congress

Dr. Tom Richmond has been elected to the MAA Congress for a three-year term as the representative of the Kentucky MAA section.

Dr. Molly Dunkum named a CPE Faculty Collaborative Fellow

Dr. Molly Dunkum was named one of two Faculty Collaborative Fellow by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. The award is for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years, and carries its own honorarium and travel funds.

2015 Math Symposium Dates Announced

The 35th Annual Mathematics Symposium will be held November 13th and 14th in Snell Hall on WKU's main campus. This year's keynote speaker is Professor Henry Segerman of Oklahoma State University. Students are encouraged to submit abstracts.
