Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida is a deeply allegorical film that attempts to reconcile the legacies of the Cold War and Poland’s Nazi Occupation during World War II. Weeks away from taking her vows as a nun, Anna is told by her Mother Superior that she must first visit her Aunt Wanda, a famed communist judge who is also Anna’s only living relative. Tempted by the pleasures of the outside world and plagued by the mystery of her parent’s deaths, Anna embarks on a journey with Wanda to uncover the truth about her family. Acclaimed for its inventive cinematography and naturalist performances, Ida received numerous accolades from critics and won the 2014 Academy Award for “Best Foreign Language Film.”
