Nikki Gross

Advertising and Graphic Design major, Spring 2017

"The logo was designed to be fairly simplistic, with the Stari Most as the main visual focal point. The bridge is not only one of the country's most recognizable landmarks but is also a symbolic structure for the country's history. The colors and elements of the Bosnia & Herzegovina flag are also showcased with the stars and yellow and blue accents." - Nikki Gross, designer

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization states, "[The city of] Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO. The Old Bridge area, with its pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural features, is an outstanding example of a multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City of Mostar is a symbol of reconciliation, international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities" (UNESCO World Heritage)

Logo Selection

During the fall and spring of 2016-17, the Office of International Programs held a contest for WKU students to design the logo for the upcoming International Year of Bosnia and Herzegovina. OIP received more than half a dozen submissions from WKU students, and the three finalists were released to the campus community for a vote. This design, by WKU graduating senior Nikki Gross, emerged as the winner and will serve as the visual anchor for the IYO throughout the year.

Gross was a student in a Graphic Design class taught by Arden von Haeger (Art instructor) in fall 2016, during which von Haeger assigned his students the task of designing a logo featuring Bosnian motifs in order to submit them to the contest. Concerning the selection of her design, Gross states, "Being involved in the IYO logo competition was both an educating and creative experience...I'm excited to see the logo being used to promote the International Year of Bosnia and Herzegovina."

The logo selection process is repeated annually for each upcoming IYO, so interested students should look for requests for submissions for the IYO Cuba in fall 2017.
