Ice Climbing

  • Location: Cedar Falls, IA
  • Time: All Day

Did you miss the ice climbing competition?  No worries, you have another chance to go!  The University of Northern Iowa’s 80 feet of world class ice is awaiting your challenge.  Saturday and Sunday we will spend the day ice climbing.  We will also visit other recreational activities that UNI’s recreation center offers.  No ice climbing experience is necessary, only a good attitude and willingness to try something new.

BIG RED REP OFF 2012

  • Location: Fitness Center
  • Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm

The Big Red Rep Off is an upper body muscular endurance competition that will be held in the Fitness Center. Each participant will have 10 minutes to complete as many correct reps as possible. The winner will be the participant with the most reps based upon his or her weight lifted relative to their body weight. For example, women= lift ½ of body weight; males= body weight.

Sign up for the Big Red Rep Off starts on February 13, 2012. Walk-ins are welcome, but subject to availability. To make an appointment, or for more information, stop by the Health and Fitness Lab (room 20A in the Preston Center).

All participants must sign a consent form/waiver!

Each participant will have 10 minutes to complete as many reps possible.

Rules:

  • Participants must use a closed grip (thumb around bar)
  • The lifter must lie on his/her back with head, shoulders, and butt in full contact on the bench. This position must be maintained throughout the attempt.
  • Feet must remain flat on the floor at all times.
  • Participants must show control of the weight at all times while lowering the bar to touch the chest and back to full elbow extension (no bouncing!!)
  • A Health and Fitness Lab staff member will judge each lift. If any of the above criteria are not met, the lift will be invalid.

Muscle of the Month: CYCLE TO FLORIDA

  • Time: All Day

Cycle to Florida (February 1- February 29)

Spring Break is coming up; everyone is working on getting fit for their swimwear! We came up with an appropriate Muscle of the Month idea to set the mood! Cycle to Florida! Cycle to Florida will last all the way until the end of February. Our challenge will be, as a group, complete enough miles to make it to all the way to Florida. Individually, whoever completes the most miles will be the winner for that month, one male and one female.  You can participate as many times as you want through February, on any bike we provide in the Fitness Center!

Male and Female winners will receive a $15 gift card and there will be three raffle prize winners, each winning $10 gift cards. 

Directions:

  • Notify fitness center staff before you start the competition.
  • Exercise on a bike as long as you want.
  • Once finished, notify a fitness center staff to look at the mileage on the bike so they can record it for you.

We are only going to track full miles. For example, if you bike for 3.5 miles, then it will be counted as 3.

Backpacking

  • Location: Frozen Head State Park
  • Time: All Day

Join ORAC as we head to the beautiful Cumberland Mountains of Eastern Tennessee on this weekend backpacking adventure.  The park's lush vegetation, small streams, waterfalls and beautiful mountains make Frozen Head one of Tennessee's most scenic parks.
