Registration for IL Courses

There are several ways to request registration for Independent Learning courses. Please select the method that best meets your needs.

Tuition payment is required at the time of enrollment. We accept MasterCard, Discover, Visa, check, cash, money orders, and financial aid.

Register Online:

Please note: Credit Card payment is required to process your online registration request.

Current WKU Students:

  1. Log in to TopNet with your WKU ID# and Pin.
  2. Select Registration from the Student Services tab.
  3. Select Register for Independent Learning.
  4. Follow the on screen directions provided to make your registration request.

Non-WKU Students:

You may sign up for Independent Learning courses as a visiting or non-degree seeking student without being formally admitted to the university. If you would like to work toward a degree from Western Kentucky University, you will need to contact the Office of Admissions at (270) 745-2551 or select Apply Online Now from the WKU homepage.
An admissions fee will apply.

To take Independent Learning courses as a visiting or non-degree seeking student you will need to complete the steps below to apply to take courses from Independent Learning.

  1. Go to TopNet
  2. Select Admissions on the left hand side of the screen.
  3. Under Independent Learning, select Apply for Independent Learning only - not pursuing a degree (non-semester based, self-paced courses)
  4. Follow the on screen directions provided to complete the online application for Independent Learning.
  5. Please allow 1-2 business days for your application to be processed.
  6. If you supplied an email address in your application you will receive your WKU ID# and Pin in your email. If you did not supply an email address, you can go to TopNet and select WKU ID Lookup on the right side of the screen.
  7. After 1-2 business days and/or receiving your WKU ID# and Pin, please follow these steps to request registration.
    1. Log in to TopNet with your WKU ID# and Pin.
    2. Select Registration from the Student Services tab.
    3. Select Register for Independent Learning.
    4. Follow the on–screen directions provided to make your registration request.

Register Using Financial Aid

To register for Independent Learning using Financial Aid you will need to complete the steps below. Some restrictions apply when using Financial Aid to cover your Independent Learning course. Visit our FAQs for more information.

  1. Fill out the Independent Learning Agreement, located in the Financial Aid website.
  2. Please allow 7–14 business days for your application to be processed.
  3. If approved, you will receive an email from Financial Aid stating you have been approved.
  4. Independent Learning will receive your registration and send out course materials and information after processing.

Register by Mail, Fax, or In–person:

To register for an Independent Learning course, please print and complete the Registration Form (PDF) and mail, fax, or hand–deliver it to Independent Learning.

You are welcome to stop by our office and register for courses or look at course materials to decide whether you want to register.
