Parking Impacts and Adjustments Due to DUC Renovation (click here for more)

Downing University Center (DUC) Offices Relocation Parking Impacts and Adjustments

Due to the upcoming DUC renovation, please see the following information regarding parking changes:

  1. Department Relocations
    • Departments relocating to Garrett Conference Center (GCC) include: Bookstore, ID Center, SIFE Print Center, Post Office, and the Aramark offices
    • Departments relocating to Helm-Cravens Library: Student Government Association and Student Affairs
  2. Faculty/ Staff Parking
    • Because of DUC closings, permit relocations to the Hill will include:
      • Nine (9) Premium permit holders
        • This will increase the demand for Premium parking on the Hill.  Currently, there are enough Premium spaces to accommodate this increase.
      • Sixteen (16) Non-Premium permit holders
        • There will be an increased demand for Non-Premium parking on the Hill.  Since Non-Premium parking is already full, people are being advised to continue parking in PS1.
    • Relocations to GCC
      • There should be minimal impact to Premium parking.
    • South Lawn Lot Closing
      • Effective March 21, 2012, half of South Lawn Lot is closed.
      • The other half of the lot will close at a date to be determined.
      • Premium permit holders in Tate Page Hall (TPH) and Academic Complex will be affected.
  3. Visitor Parking
    • There will be a significant increase in demand for visitor parking at GCC due to the relocation of the departments.  Combined estimates of visitors to these locations are up to 250 visitors per day.
      • Many of these visitors are students who will walk or use transit to get close to the building.
      • We are working to increase short-term parking to accommodate the demand for people with quick errands at these locations.
    • Dental Hygiene Clinic parking will be relocated to the Health Services Lot.
    • Due to SGA relocating, access to visitor parking near Helm-Craven Library will be limited.
  4. Departmental and Service Vehicle Parking
    • Department of Facilities Management will have continued access to DUC since part of the building will remain open at all times.  A portion of the South Lawn spaces will be relocated to Avenue of Champions.
    • Since the bookstore requires departmental vehicle parking, accommodations are being made on Faculty House Drive.
    • Aramark will maintain two (2) vehicle parking spaces in Faculty House Lot.
  5. Recommendations
    • Faculty/Staff Parking
      • Ten (10) spaces in each of the gated lots will be available to purchase an upgraded permit.  Faculty and Staff will pay the difference between their current permit and the pro-rated amount of the gated permit.
      • Four (4) reserved spaces in Faculty House Lot will be converted to Premium parking.
      • A small parking lot will be created at intersection of Normal Street and Mimosa Alley that will provide premium and short-term meter parking.
    • Short Term Parking
The parking configuration on Faculty House Drive will be changed.
      • Seven (7) parallel spaces will be converted from Premium parking to metered parking.
        • Three (3) spaces will be relocated from Faculty House Drive
        • Two (2) spaces will be relocated from South Lawn Lot
        • Two (2) spaces will be relocated from Chapel lot and replaced with Chapel visitor parking signs and time limit parking for the Alumni Center.
      • Meters will be added to new parking lot at Normal Street and Mimosa Alley lot to provide short-term parking for students.  The metered spaces will have a two (2) hour parking limit.
    • Departmental Parking
      • Service vehicle parking will be consolidated on the left near disability parking to include:
        • One (1) bookstore space
        • Three (3) university service vehicle spaces
      • Three (3) service vehicle spaces will be moved from South Lawn Lot to Avenue of Champions.
      • Two (2) Dental Hygiene Clinic spaces will be moved from South Lawn Lot to Health Services Lot.
    •   Disability Parking – South Lawn
      • Two (2) disability parking spaces will be moved to the outside of the construction fence.  These spaces will be as close as possible to new the temporary sidewalk near TPH.
