Critical Language Scholarship: J.P. Stovall - "I was fortunate enough to win the State Department Critical Language Scholarship for summer 2011. I was flown to Washington DC for a predeparture orientation, and then put on a plane again for Beijing, China with 25 other students, both graduate and undergraduate, from many of the best universities in the United States. We were each placed in separate homes with Chinese families, and each week took a minimum of 20 hours of formal classes. We signed contract agreeing to abstain from speaking English for the entirety of our time in China. The idea behind the program was to completely immerse us into daily Chinese culture, as well as breaking our dependence on English for communication.Midway through the program, we were given a week off from our usual class routine and were taken to the western Tibetan region and the Province of Qinghai and visited ancient Buddhist temples and got to see an entirely new aspect of China and a look into how diverse it really is."
