The Mahurin Honors College Eligibility Requirements

The Mahurin Honors College welcomes all first-time freshman applicants to apply! The MHC uses a holistic application review process, and each application is considered based on the following components:

  • Strength of writing samples
  • Level of involvement
  • Academic quality
    • GPA from sending high school.

Note: As of August 1, 2021, The Mahurin Honors College no longer requires ACT or SAT scores for admission consideration. While the MHC will no longer will require these scores for our admissions process, it is important to note that to be eligible for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship, you must have above a 31 ACT score (1420 SAT score) on file with WKU.  Additionally, the top academic merit award requires BOTH a 3.8 or higher GPA AND a 30 or higher ACT (or corresponding SAT score).

Priority Application Deadline: December 1 of a student's senior year.

All first-time freshman applications must be received by 11:59pm Central Time on December 1 for Mahurin Honors College priority admission consideration.

Rolling Admission

The Mahurin Honors College accepts applications for the freshman class year-round.  However, applications submitted after the December 1 Priority Deadline will be considered as space permits, as the freshman class cohort is limited to approximately 300 students.

The final deadline for applications is July 15 of the year a student would attend (rising freshmen in college).  Should you wish to apply after this deadline, please contact us at honors.admissions@wku.edu.

Honors Course Eligibility

First-time freshmen who are accepted into The Mahurin Honors College or who have been placed on The Mahurin Honors College's Waiting List are eligible to take any course with an Honors designation.

First-time freshmen who are not accepted into The Mahurin Honors College may still enroll in Honors courses in their first semester at WKU if they have a high school GPA of a 3.5 or higher.
