Bonita S. Phelps was born in Washington, D.C, and grew up in Maryland. She began studying Spanish in high school and she chose to continue her studies of the Spanish language and culture at the university level. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature from Towson University and a Master of Arts degree in Intercultural Communication (Spanish emphasis) from the University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC). She has also taken classes at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. and the Universidad de Santa María in Arequipa, Peru. She moved to south central Kentucky in 1999.
The teaching philosophy of Bonita S. Phelps, first addressing goals, is as follows:
1) To provide the students with the skills necessary for basic communication in the target language
2) To provide elicit the students’ cross-cultural understanding and cultural awareness
3) To expand the students’ knowledge of Spanish and Latin American history and geography.
Her intentions are to help her students achieve basic communicative proficiency in Spanish and also t o alleviate their fear of second-language acquisition. The process of learning is two-way.
The current teaching interests of Bonita S. Phelps are to continue to develop means if evaluating oral proficiency and to continue to develop means of effectively teaching reading comprehension.
