Fly Fishing Montana: A College Course for High School Students

Note: This program was offered in 2016 and 2017. It is not currently scheduled for 2018. Please check back with us re: 2019. Thanks.

Join us for a fantastic course designed to teach you the fundamentals of fly fishing. Fly fishing is a lifetime leisure pursuit; treat yourself to some quality instruction to jump start the learning curve.

Fly Fishing in Montana:

Come join us and experience fly fishing on world renowned waters containing 5 species of trout: rainbow, brown, cutthroat, hybrid cutbow, and brook. These waters offer anglers a chance at a "Grand Slam" (catching 4-5 species of trout in one day).

Scholarship Available:

Due to the generosity of a current WKU student, one $2,000 scholarship for participating in the 2017 high school program will be available. Students interested in applying for this scholarship should contact Dr. Raymond Poff via e-mail raymond.poff@wku.edu for information and application.

Other individuals or businesses interested in financially supporting additional high school students in this program should contact Dr. Raymond Poff.

Important things to know:

  • No prior fishing experience is required.
  • Fly fishing equipment is provided to use during the course.
  • Students are expected to maintain high standards of behavior.

Course objectives:

  • Acquire an understanding of fly fishing equipment.
  • Be able to tie key knots needed for fly fishing.
  • Demonstrate proper fly casting techniques.
  • Effectively present flies when fishing on moving water.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of entomology as it relates to fishing.

2017 Program:

Cost: $1,897 Student; $2,197 Parent/Grandparent; and includes:
  • round trip flight to Missoula, MT (baggage fees not included)
  • Missoula airport hotel shuttle
  • 3 full days of fly fishing and instruction (float trips with one guide and 2 anglers/boat),
  • use of fly fishing equipment (rod, reel, etc.)
  • terminal tackle (leader, tippet, flies)
  • guide gratuity
  • 4 nights lodging
  • lunch & dinner for 3 days
  • 3 credit hours upon successful completion of course

Grant: Program costs were reduced by a grant from the Cabela's Outdoor Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to efforts that promote and protect hunting, shooting sports, trapping, fishing, camping and conservation. Through donations from generous Cabela’s customers who choose to “round up” their purchases to the nearest dollar at Cabela’s stores, Cabela’s Outdoor Fund contributes to like-mind organizations in communities across the country.

“This is a great opportunity for students to experience the outdoors and learn about fly fishing,” said Scott Wanetka, vice president of Cabela’s Outdoor Fund. “Cabela’s Outdoor Fund is proud to support this program and we hope these students will come away from this experience with a lifelong hobby and a strong passion for the outdoors.”

School of KRS logoCosts were further reduced by a donation from the WKU School of Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport (KRS). The School of KRS houses the Recreation Administration, Sport Management, Physical Education, and Exercise Science undergraduate programs. On-campus and online options are available for the M.S. in Recreation and Sport Administration. Online concentrations include: Interscholastic Athletic Administration, Intercollegiate Athletic Administration, Facility & Event Management, Sports Media & Branding, and Athletic Training. The M.S. in Kinesiology is also offered.

Missoulian Angler is the oldest fly shop in Missoula and is conveniently located to four rivers; Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Clark Fork, and Rock Creek. Several of their longtime clients enjoy expanding out to the Missouri, Yellowstone, Madison, Smith, Big Horn, and Big Hole Rivers.
