Environmental Health and Safety - Back Safety

Lower back pain is one of the most frequent of musculoskeletal disorders, and will affect a large percentage of workers over the age of 20. It is the most common cause of job-related disability and leading contributor to missed work. Jobs that include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or restraining of an object can be at greater risk of injury.  Plan the lift ahead of how to transport the load, the direction, how many people will be needed if any others, or can a mechanical means be used.  Keep the load close to the body, do not twist with the load, and allow the leg muscle to bear the weight.
