School Leaders Licensure Assessment
This announcement is to inform current and former WKU education administration students of important changes regarding School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA). This applies to all Principal, Supervisor of Instruction (SOI), Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP), and Director of Special Education (DOSE) and Superintendent students seeking initial (Level I) certification.
- If you have completed your Principal, SOI, DPP or DOSE program AND you have already been certified, this announcement does not apply to you and you may disregard.
- If you have ever successfully passed the SLAA in the past, you may also disregard this message.
- However, if you have yet to complete your Level I program or you have completed and have not been certified, this information is for you.
Starting Dec. 1, 2020, ALL advanced education administration certifications will be required to take and pass the new SLLA test (6990) to become certified. This includes Level I Principal, SOI, DPP, DOSE, and superintendent. Between now and December 1, 2020, candidates may complete the current version of the SLLA (6011), and a passing score on that version of the test will meet this requirement. The key difference between these two assessments is that the old SLLA (6011) is based on the ISLLC standards; the new SLLA (6099) will be based on the newer Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL).
After Dec. 1, 2020, the new SSLA test (6099) will be required for anyone seeking Level I principal, DPP, DOSE, or SOI certifications. If you completed your program under older course work and have yet to be certified, you may want to consider taking the current SSLA test. A passing score on the new SLLA test (6099) can also be used for certification at any time, even if completed prior to the December 1 transition date.
If you complete all coursework and apply for certification as SOI, DPP, or DOSE prior to December 1, 2020, you will be exempt from the SLLA requirement.
Beginning July 1, 2020, the Kentucky Principal Specialty Test will no longer be required for certification as principal; only the SLLA requirement as described above remains in effect.
Please note that courses in the WKU principal program since Fall 2019 have already been realigned with PSEL standards.
