Facilitation Skills

One 4-Hour Session

Introduction

Many groups are familiar with traditional forms of leadership in meetings, where the leader dominates or even controls the discussion. This course provides an examination of — and practice using — the skills and behaviors needed to effectively facilitate group meetings. It will distinguish between team meetings/discussions and controlling them as in traditional forms of leadership. The session teaches participants how to involve all group members in the discussion. It will focus on guiding rather than dominating the discussion. For the purpose of this course, a facilitator may be a disinterested third party or a group member.

Objectives

The participant will learn: (1) how to distinguish between a facilitator and a leader, (2) how to involve all team members in the discussion, (3) how to intervene on participant behavior that causes non-productive team meetings, (4) how to acquire team focus on outcomes and objectives.
