WKU Paths from Provisional to Standard Certification in Guidance Counseling, P-12

Option 1:

  • Successful completion of an approved master's program in guidance counseling (and provisional certification in guidance);
  • Successful completion of an additional 6 hours (CNS 556 and CNS 666);
  • One year of full-time employment as a provisionally-certified guidance counselor in an accredited public or private school;
  • Possession of a valid Kentucky teaching certificate; and
  • Completion of a minimum of one year of full-time classroom teaching.

Option 2:

  • Successful completion of an approved master's program in guidance counseling (and provisional certification in guidance);
  • Successful completion of an additional 6 hours (CNS 556 and CNS 666);
  • Completion of a minimum of two years of successful employment as a provisionally-certified full-time guidance counselor.

Implications for advising "certification-only" applicants at WKU:

  • Applicants for "certification-only" seeking to move from provisional to standard certification at WKU must complete 6 hours of counseling courses, CNS 556 and CNS 666, and must meet the experience criteria listed above. That is, they must have EITHER one year of teaching experience plus one year of guidance experience (Option 1), OR they must have two years of guidance experience (Option 2).
  • Applicants with provisional certification in guidance who do NOT meet the requirements for one of the above options will not qualify for Standard Guidance certification. However, they may renew the provisional certification by completing 9 hours of counseling courses for each five year period.
  • In the past, when the certification-only program for Standard Guidance was 18 hours, those who were provisionally certified could get their certificates renewed by completing the Standard Guidance courses. However, that is no longer necessarily true. It is still true for those who meet the experience requirements above (either one year of teaching experience plus one year of guidance experience, or two years of guidance experience). It is NOT true for those who lack the requisite teaching or guidance experience. Those individuals must take 9 hours of counseling courses to renew the provisional guidance certification.
  • For students seeking "certification-only" in counseling, advisors must check applicants' experience. If the student does not meet the experience criteria above, he or she must take 9 hours in order to renew the provisional certification in guidance.
