Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. 

2 Types:

Type 1 – insulin dependent, requires daily administration of insulin

Type 2 – occurs largely as the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity


Did you know?

  • 1/3 children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes
  • Adults with diabetes are two to three times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke
  • Symptoms include excessive urination in addition to excessive thirst, weight loss, vision changes, and fatigue or shakiness
  • Impaired glucose tolerance represent the transition between health and diabetes. You can prevent transitioning into diabetes by reducing your carbohydrate intake and increasing exercise
  • Diabetes is one of the leading causes of non-violent related limb amputations.
  • Diabetes can be managed, and in some cases reversed, by low-intensity exercise.
  • Women can develop Gestational Diabetes while they are pregnant. It can lead to increased risk during birth and an increased risk of both mother and child to develop type II diabetes.
  • Healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
