Certificate in Political Communication*
This certificate allows for exploration of the role that communication plays in political systems by combining studies in the fields of communication and government / political science. The Certificate is designed for students seeking preparation for careers as legislative aides, political consultants, campaign managers, speech writers, or lobbyists. Students who complete the certificate will have a solid foundation of communication skills and theory with a working knowledge of the political system.
Housed in the Department of Communication and Department of Political Science, students are required to take:
- COMM 388, Senior Seminar in Political Communication
- PS 375, Fundamentals of Political Campaign Management
- PS 371, Public Opinion & Electoral Behavior, or PS 372, Politics & the Mass Media
- Two (2) courses from the following list of Communication Studies courses:
COMM 245 Argumentation & Debate
COMM 345 Advanced Public Speaking
COMM 346 Persuasion
COMM 349 Small Group Communication
- One (1) course from the following list of political science courses:
PS 310 The American Presidency
PS 311 Public Policy
PS 316 The Legislative Process
PS 331 Introduction to Public Policy
PS 370 American Political Parties and Interest Groups
PS 371 Public Opinion & Electoral Behavior
PS 372 Politics & the Mass Media
PS 373 Minority Politics
PS 374 Women and Politics
PS 435 American Political Thought
The certificate requires a minimum of 15 hours.
