Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives

Seeking common ground to empower cultural change, the Department of Communication supports Black Lives Matter.

We commit to the following actions:

Give priority to persons of color in hiring decisions.

Every year, we offer a WKU student the Jeffries Award for Excellence in Diversity-Enhancing Communication. Dr. Jeffries’ time with us showed us the difference one dedicated person can make to changing hearts, minds, and cultures. We honor her memory by recognizing an outstanding student who promotes diversity through their actions and their life.

Offer Interracial Communication every spring semester. The teacher will be Ryan Dearbone, President of the Bowling Green NAACP, B.A. in Broadcasting and M.A. in Organizational Communication from WKU.

Every February, we commit to offering an event highlighting communication issues related to race.

For any questions related to the above initiatives, please contact Dr. Helen Sterk, Head of the Department of Communication, at helen.sterk@wku.edu
