Dental Hygiene Students Participate in “Smiles From the Heart”
First year dental hygiene students and faculty participated in “Smiles From the Heart” on February 4, 2011. This charitable event, sponsored by Chandler Park Dental Care, provided free cleanings, x-rays, fillings and extractions. Students helped in sterilization and room preparation and assisted the dentists who volunteered their time. The event began at 7:00 am but a line formed long before that as over 300 people were able to take advantage of the free services offered. Student Casey Basham said that the event “opened by eyes to how many people don’t have access to dental care.” Mikell Nelson remarked, “I was blown away by how many people came to have dental work done.” It was a wonderful opportunity for students to see how professional worked together to provide care for the underserved in our community.
