WKU School of Nursing Students Completed the VESNIP Program through Vanderbilt University

The Vanderbilt Experience Student Nurse Internship Program, (VESNIP) was successfully completed by 14 WKU School of Nursing (SON) students this 2016 summer term under the supervision of Dr. Audrey Cornell and Vanderbilt liaison and WKU faculty member, Sarah Woodall. WKU is one of only five schools invited to participate in the VESNIP opportunity. The students received invaluable experiences with clinical placements in tracks that include; Women’s Health, Critical Care, Acute Care, Pediatrics, Psychiatric, and Perioperative.

During the internship, the Vanderbilt nursing staff has the opportunity to nominate one student from each track to receive the Vanderbilt Credo award. Dr. Audrey Cornell, Clinical Associate Professor stated, “The student receiving the Credo award is a student that has made the patient the highest priority by communicating effectively with them and their families and was committed to being a team player with the Vanderbilt healthcare staff.”

All 14 WKU nursing student participants represented the WKU SON with pride and professionalism and we are proud to say for the second year in a row,  two CHHS School of Nursing VESNIP participants were presented with the Vanderbilt Credo Award: Boone Simmons from the Acute Care Track and Carl Paulus from the Perioperative Track. Also a third student was nominated, Carly Playforth (WKU 3rd semester nursing student).

Below is a brief summary of the comments made by the Vanderbilt staff on the nominations. We look forward to Summer 2017!

Carl Paulus-(WKU 2nd Semester Nursing Student) Credo Winner

“Carl shows all of the CREDO behavior in his work ethic… He is willing to learn and go above and beyond.   Carl takes a sense of ownership in his room and work.  He communicates professionally and effectively with all the staff members.  He is not only committed to his patients but also to his coworkers.  He looks for opportunity to learn new tasks.  He will make a great nurse and hope he considers the perioperative area when he finishes.  I wish him the best of luck in his future.”

Boone Simmons (WKU 2nd Semester Nursing Student) Credo Winner

“Boone went above and beyond the second he arrived on the floor, always volunteering to help a nurse, a patient, or a family member. Boone's relationship with his patients was easily gained through his trusting and genuine caring behaviors. He was professional, yet explained in great detail why he was doing each task.  He was able to laugh and joke with families of patients and other staff members, gaining trust and building relationships. Boone was responsible for his patient assignment, their medication times, assessments, and their additional tasks without constant reminders. Boone will be a fantastic nurse and a great candidate for your Track's Credo Award!”

Carly Playforth (WKU 3rd Semester Nursing Student) Credo Nominee

“Carly was extremely professional and a wonderful student to have with me.  She always put patients and their families first, was respectful, safe & asked great questions.  She was confident in her work, but not overly confident.”
