The entire month of March, The Department of Social Work, in the College of Health and Human Services, celebrated Social Work Month.  The Department hosted several events and participated in Lobby Day at the State Capitol. Several Social Work students and faculty from all of our campuses shared their experiences with Lobby Day:

WKU-Bowling Green: “I was incredibly pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm of the students and faculty. WKU far outnumbered any other social work program there. Most had to get up before 5 am and sit over two hours in a cramped vehicle, yet they arrived at The Capitol ready to lobby! I know many stepped outside their comfort zone and spoke up to legislators about bills that would impact their future clients. I was humbled by their courage and so proud! I’m ready to start organizing for next year!” – Laura Bain-Selbo, BSW Faculty Member

WKU-Bowling Green: “It was a great day. I loved watching the students’ reactions as they saw everything live and in action, rather than just reading and discussing hypotheticals.”– Dr. Dana Sullivan, BSW Program Director

WKU-Bowling Green: “It was fantastic to see WKU so well represented at Lobby Day.” – Kellye McIntyre, Field Director

WKU-Owensboro: “Students felt the experience helped them make the connection from discussing policy in the classroom to understanding the process legislatively.”– Dr. Whitney Harper, BSW Faculty Member

WKU-Elizabethtown: “After meeting with Rep. Duplessis, one of my students said”, “we need to add another policy course to the program.”  “I never thought I’d ever hear those words.” – Dr. Larry Owens, BSW Faculty Member

WKU-Glasgow: "It was a great opportunity for students to join in common cause with others from across all WKU campuses to influence the passage of social policies important to social workers and to the social welfare of Kentuckians."   - Dr. Simon Funge, BSW Faculty Member

WKU Glasgow: "I learned a lot by being able to see how the different parts of legislation work, and being able to sit in on meetings." - Lauren Ollery, BSW Student

WKU Glasgow: "I enjoyed seeing how a policy was proposed and review by the Senate." - Chrystal Martin, BSW Student
