On July 30th, 2014, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at WKU sponsored a research seminar on "Automated Analysis of Students' Input on Social Media" given by a guest speaker, Dr. Xiao Hu from the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Information and Technology Studies in the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include Learning Analytics, a newly emerging but influential multidisciplinary field that aims to improve the understanding of learning and to optimize the learning environment and processes.

Dr. Hu started from an illuminative introduction to the Learning Analytics, including its methodology, trends, and resources, and continued with her various projects on leveraging students' input on social media platforms using computational, statistical and mixed methods. The talk attracted a sizable audience of faculty members and doctoral students from the Teacher Education, Psychology, Educational Administration, Leadership, and Research, Library Media Studies, and DELO, as well as representatives from ConnectedNation, a local non-profit organization in the application of broadband technologies to education.

The audience and the speaker had lively discussions during the seminar. Professor Marguerita DeSander, Department Head of Educational Administration, Leadership & Research says that the talk has opened the eyes into a cutting-edge field of Learning Analytics and its applications in educational research and practice. Dr. Xiaoxia Huang, Assistant Professor in Education Technology and Ms. Corie Martin, Creative Web Services Manager at WKU feel the seminar inspiring because it provides an additional lens for them to look at the data collected in their research and work.

The event is generously sponsored by Dean Sam Evans, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and chaired by Dr. Jie Zhang, Assistant Professor of Educational Research. During Dr. Hu's short stay in Bowling Green, she also had opportunities to meet professors in educational technology at WKU and Mr. Brendan Legg, Vice President of ConnectedNation and discussed potential collaborative projects on mutually interested topics.
