REU Project 13—Sequence finishing and genome annotation of C. scatologenes—Dr. Claire Rinehart, Biology Department

The strict anaerobic bacteria C. scatologenes is thought to play a role in malodorant production. Recently we sequenced C. scatologenes in order to elucidate the metabolic poten-tial of this organism. We are in the process of finishing and annotating the genome. The genome assembly is being aligned to the genomes of other closely related bacteria. These alignments will aid in the design of experiments to facilitate the closure of the current gaps. Annotated genes will be analyzed for the metabolic potential of C. scatologenes and its potential to contribute to malordorous emissions.
