Companions of Respected Elders (C.O.R.E.)

The purpose of C.O.R.E. is to provide an opportunity for students at WKU to deeply affect the lives of elderly individuals in the Bowling Green area.  The student will do this by offering companionship, hope and a chance to positively impact the life of another person.  Pre-professional, Health Care Administration, Nursing, Gerontology, Psychology and Social Work students in particular are encouraged to participate for the knowledge and experience they will gain.  Students have the opportunity for one on one partnerships with residents at facilities, in addition to monthly visits as a group to Signature HealthCARE of Bowling Green.

C.O.R.E. is a student organization that is focused on pairing students with the elderly.

C.O.R.E.'s mission is to create a positive atmosphere where both individuals mutually benefit from the experience.

C.O.R.E. members will be required to commit at least one hour per week to visiting the elderly person that they are matched with.

The Music and Memory Project:

This semester, CORE is assisting Signature Healthcare of Bowling Green in launching the Music and Memory Project.  This initiative recognizes the therapeutic benefits that music has for all residents, but especially those suffering from dementia.  You can learn more about this international project here.  Based on surveys of residents’ musical preferences, CORE will be collecting and organizing hundreds of songs to load onto MP3 players for the residents.  How can you help?  By donating used or new cds, iTunes gift cards or monetary donations to help purchase music.  By far the most popular genres in the surveys were gospel and country, with favorite decades of music being the 50s-70s, but we will accept any music to help build up the library available to residents.  If you have any questions, please call the group’s advisor Marybeth Hunt at 270-745-3177 or email

C.O.R.E. also participates in several other projects and events throughout the semester.  Last semester C.O.R.E. participated in:
