University Experience – Special Topics (UC 176)
I am excited and honored to be working with such a great team in the Academic Advising & Retention Center (AARC). As the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising Practices it will be my focus to work with the advising staff to make sure that we are serving as they are work toward a vision of academic success at WKU.
The Advising staff in the AARC primarily work with any undergraduate student who are part of the Exploratory Program. This program is for all students who are currently exploring their major options, those who have not chosen a major, and those wishing to change their major. We are focused on helping students find academic direction and aid them in working toward graduation at WKU. This is possible by the resources we provide to all WKU students. The Majors and Minors Fair gives students the opportunity to talk with over 45 WKU departments and academic support offices in one location. Student Exploring to Expand Knowledge (SEEK) is a first year learning community for students that desire to explore major and career interests. Students participating in SEEK take common classes in addition to having outside of the classroom opportunities afforded to them to enhance the WKU experience. Additionally, we have the First Year Initiative Programs were students can learn about resources that will aid in their academic success.
While students will continue to be the main focus of the Advising staff we are striving to make sure that we are a resource to all WKU advisors as well. The Campus Advising Network (CAN) provides continual training for advisors to be able to better serve the students of WKU. In the coming year we hope to expand the resources that we provide to faculty and staff advisors.
Please feel free to contact me with ideas and thoughts about how undergraduate advising practices can better serve the WKU community.
