WKU Cornerstone Program

The mission of the Cornerstone Program is to provide academic assistance to newly admitted students in their transition to Western Kentucky University and to expose students to the educational resources that will enhance and aid them in their educational success.


What is the Cornerstone Program?

The Cornerstone Program is a retention initiative at Western Kentucky University for under-prepared students with two or more college readiness courses.  Cornerstone students are introduced available academic resources that are necessary to enhance their success and enrich their college experience. Cornerstone staff members help students develop interdependent relationships with appropriate campus resources, while providing direction and guidance to those who are entering college for the first time.

The Program will:

  • Direct students to academic and community resources
  • Provide students with general academic information
  • Help students develop skills needed to be successful in college
    • Decision-Making Skills
    • Time Management Skills
    • Study Skills
  • Direct students to engagement activities on campus
  • Provide strategies for academic improvement and class attendance
  • Provide students with increased interaction with faculty and staff

Participants of Cornerstone Program

Students who are part of the Cornerstone Program, housed in the Advising & Career Development Center, are required to participate in all aspects of the program. The program will have a prescribed set of activities designed to enhance student academic performance. Students in the program are required to complete all program activities listed below:

  • Enroll in needed supplemental courses
  • Attend and participate in a weekly, one hour workshop for the first 12 weeks of each semester
  • Attend 3 different campus events or campus organization meetings/events each semester
  • Participate in monthly programming activities
