Personal Counseling

Personal counseling appointments are a free service available Monday through Friday to all Gatton Academy students in Florence Schneider Hall. Appointments can be scheduled with Dr. Christopher “Pokey” Bowen, L.P.C.C., Chelsee Dalcourt, L.P.C.A., or through WKU’s Counseling and Testing Center.

Because Pokey and Chelsee are both licensed counselors by the state of Kentucky, they work closely with one another to provide the best counseling services possible for students. Some students may feel more comfortable seeing one counselor over the other or even seeking services outside of Florence Schneider Hall.

All personal counseling sessions are kept confidential. The exception to this rule is if there is a danger to self or others. The rules of confidentiality are explained in more detail upon a student’s initial appointment and are available to parents by contacting Pokey or Chelsee via email.

Both Pokey and Chelsee are trained to work with students who present a variety of concerns. Because of this, there is no concern too big or too small. Some of these concerns may include academic performance, stress and anxiety, personal and/or familial relationships, personal identity and growth, and adjusting to life at Gatton.

Starting in the Fall of 2016, Chelsee created and implemented a weekly lunch time roundtable group activity that rotates through different themes each week. This program, “Chew ‘n Chat” is a great way for students to get to know each other as well as bring a friend to an informal group counseling meeting. These art based activities are also a great way for students to connect with their artistic side while at Gatton.

Students will first work with their Residential Counselor on their floor as well as Beth Hawke to alleviate any immediate concerns. If necessary and best for the student, either Pokey or Chelsee will be called and will come to the dorm for emergencies.

Parents have the option to disclose directly to Pokey or Chelsee the mental health history of their student. If needed, both Pokey or Chelsee can work hand in hand with the home counselor to ensure the best continuation of care for the student.

Please feel free to reach out to Pokey or Chelsee directly for any current or future questions, comments or concerns. Our contact information can be found on the right-hand side of this page.
