Finals Week and End of Semester Updates
- Monday, May 5th, 2025
Dear WKU Community,
As we conclude the 2024–25 academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the collective accomplishments that have made this a truly outstanding year for Western Kentucky University. Our mission to serve students, advance knowledge, and enrich our region continues to be powered by your commitment, creativity, and resilience.
Our students have inspired us time and again. From presenting research at Scholars Day, and national conferences and winning regional competitions, to engaging in service-learning, internships, and study abroad programs—WKU students have shown what it means to be leaders both in and beyond the classroom. At spring commencement, we will celebrate the graduation of another talented Hilltopper class, many of whom are already stepping into roles in healthcare, education, public service, technology, and the arts.
Our faculty have continued to shine as scholars, mentors, and innovators. This year, faculty secured competitive research grants in areas such as environmental science, health disparities, and educational technology. Several were recognized with state and national awards for teaching excellence and academic leadership. The reimagining of Honors (Honors 2.0) and the launch of new interdisciplinary programs are just two examples of how our faculty are shaping the future of higher education at WKU.
Our staff have been the backbone of our success. Whether supporting student services, maintaining our beautiful campus, or implementing innovative technology systems to improve efficiency, our staff consistently go above and beyond.
Lastly, this year’s successful SACSCOC reaffirmation would not have been possible without the expertise and dedication of the entire campus. We are all particularly grateful to Dr. Beth Laves for her leadership in this endeavor.
While we celebrate these successes, I also want to acknowledge the challenges many of us have faced. Mental health matters. Whether you are a student navigating final week, a faculty member closing out a busy semester, or a staff member supporting our mission, it’s okay to ask for help and to take time for yourself. WKU is here for you. That is why I want to take this moment to say: Your well-being is important.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many support resources available, including:
- WKU Counseling Center – Free and confidential services for students: https://www.wku.edu/heretohelp/
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – Confidential support for faculty and staff: https://www.anthem.com/employer/employee-benefits-programs/services
The heart of WKU is its people. I am grateful to serve such a talented, caring, and hardworking community. Thank you for making this year one of continued progress and pride on the Hill.
Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2025–26.
With appreciation,
Bud Fischer
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
