Throughout history, therapeutic massage has been used by healthcare professionals as a means of alleviating pain and calming the nerves. It is one of the oldest of the natural healing arts used in maintaining the life and health of the human body. Massage has suffered some setbacks through the years. Due to advancing technology, it was brushed aside to make way for more sophisticated modes of medical treatment; not to mention its misuse and abuse. In spite of it all, massage has regained a place as a professionally legitimate healthcare practice.
Benefits of Massage
Types of Massage Available:
Localized Stress Session: a 30 minute session designed to concentrate deep tissue work on a specific area of tension, often the neck and back.
Full Body Massage: a 60 minute session using Swedish massage and deep tissue work designed to enhance circulation, concentrate on areas of concern and encourage deep relaxation. This may incorporate connective strokes, vibration, friction, and kneading along with active and passive joint movement.

What to Expect During a Massage Session
The massage therapist might ask about the reasons you are getting a massage, current physical condition, medical history, life style and stress level, experiences with specific areas of pain, and whether there is any specific need you want addressed during the massage.
The massage takes place on a comfortable, padded massage table. The massage
therapist will tell you in what position to lie on the table.
Expect a peaceful and comfortable environment. The massage therapist may play music during the massage and/or light candles to enhance the experience.
Before the massage begins, the massage therapist may offer some advice that will improve the quality of your massage. A common one is to breathe, especially if a sensitive area is being worked.
The therapist will leave the room while you undress to your own level of comfort. You should take off only as much as you are comfortable removing. The therapist will uncover only the part of the body being massaged, insuring that modesty is respected at all times. The draping also keeps the person receiving the massage warm. You should remove any jewelry that might interfere with the massage.
The massage therapist may use lotion, which reduces drag on the skin while performing the massage strokes. If you are allergic to some oils or lotions, be sure to tell your massage therapist so you both can make sure the ingredients in the oil or lotion do not bother you.
NOTE: Because the massage room is small, please do not wear perfume or cologne.
If you are interested in receiving a massage through the Health & Fitness Lab and this is the first time you will make an appointment, please fill out the required massage questionnaire and bring it with you when you come to make an appointment. Massage Form.pdf
