Alfred Russel Wallace : Alfred Wallace : A. R. Wallace :
Russel Wallace : Alfred Russell Wallace (sic)

Rationalists and the Schools (S623ac: 1906)

Editor Charles H. Smith's Note: Story/N on a public 'declaration' signed by Wallace and others; printed on page 8 of the 5 January 1906 issue of The Yorkshire Post (Leeds). To link directly with this page, connect with: http://people.wku.edu/charles.smith/wallace/S623AC.htm

A 'declaration' signed by a number of prominent men, including Dr. Alfred Russel Wallace, Professor E. Ray Lancaster, Mr. George Jacob Holyoake, Mr. Frederick Harrison, Mr. John M. Robinson (Liberal candidate for Tyneside), Sir Hiram S. Maxim, Earl Russell, Mr. F. G. Hobson (chairman of the Beverley Education Committee), has been issued by the Rationalist Press Association, arguing that secular instruction alone should be given in State or rate aided schools. The document is interesting as indicating the alternative to the late Government's education policy. The signatories protest against any form of religious instruction being given, either wholly or partly, at public expense, and they also emphatically object to the use of the Bible in such schools, except in so far as selected Scriptural passages of non-theological import may be introduced into lessons on secular morality.
