War for Such a Cause (S569a: 1899)

Editor Charles H. Smith's Note: A brief letter from Wallace inserted at the end of 'National Memorial,' a story/N on an anti-war memorial signed by dozens of people.      Prof. Alfred Russell Wallace writes as follows: "No words are strong enough to express my horror and detestation of the course pursued by our Government, who, I can hardly now believe, really mean to go to war for such a ridiculous mus [sic] of a cause. I hope it is merely bluff, upheld by lies and abuse, to get good terms."
