Dr. Michele Fiala,
Professor of Oboe and Bassoon








 Michele Fiala is the Assistant Professor of Oboe, Bassoon, and Music Theory at Western Kentucky University. Her recent solo CD, The Light Wraps You (on MSR Classics) has been critically acclaimed in the American Record Guide.  Dr. Fiala has concertized throughout the United States, Italy, and Canada. The Salt Lake Tribune spoke of her “energy and buoyant playing.”

Dr. Fiala has appeared as a guest artist at the Conservatories of Novara, Italy, and Udine, Italy, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Arizona State University, University of Memphis, Utah State University, Miami University at Oxford and Lincoln Memorial University. She has performed with numerous orchestras, including Orchestra Nashville, the Phoenix Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony, Tucson Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic, and with such artists as Lee Ann Rimes, Roberta Flack, Barry Williams, Trey Anastasio, and Daniel Rodriguez. Dr. Fiala has performed in  the Banff Summer Music Festival (Banff, Alberta, Canada),
the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), and six of the last seven conferences of the International Double Reed Society. She performs with the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra. Previously she was the principal oboist of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, taught at Georgetown College and Asbury College, and was a member of the Eastern Kentucky University Faculty Wind Quintet.

Dr. Fiala holds both a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and a Master of Music degree from Arizona State University, where she studied oboe with Martin Schuring and bassoon with Dr. Jeffrey Lyman. She also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kentucky, where she studied oboe with Bruce Morrison and bassoon with Peter Simpson.
