I promise I'll actually put some useful content on this page at some point in the near future. Until then, here are some resources for Western students trying to create their sites:

Activating Your Webpage

Every WKU student has a personal website, but it needs to be activated before you can post to it. To activate your site, go here: http://www.wku.edu/infotech/index.php?page=318.

Creating Your Page

You can use a number of tools to create your site. If you know HTML, you can do everything with Notepad. Then again, if you know HTML you already know that as well. You can also use editing software like Macromedia Dreamweaver (my favorite), or MS FrontPage. You can get a free trial version of Dreamweaver here. Scroll down to "Web design, development and publishing."

Page Layout

The latest thing in laying out your webpage is Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It lets you define the position of text and graphics on the page, without all the extra code that HTML requires. For those of us who are not-so graphically inclined, tables are the way to go. First, design your page using the old pencil and paper, then divide your design into cells based on the blocks of information you have. Finally, use Dreamweaver (or your editing software) to create the table. Insert your text and any pictures you want, and you're ready to go.

Publishing Your Page

There are two ways to upload your site onto the WKU server. One is directly through Dreamweaver, and the other is through a software program called WS_FTP. Whether you use Dreamweaver or not, I'd suggest going with FTP. From personal experience, uploading directly off of an editor always seems to lead to more problems with lost pages and links going off to nowhere.

To get WS_FTP and learn how to use it, go here: http://www.wku.edu/infotech/index.php?page=434
If you want to publish directly from Dreamweaver, go here: http://www.wku.edu/infotech/index.php?page=316

Good luck! And if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at kimberly.fletcher192@wku.edu. Oh, and I really will put something useful on this page at some point. I mean it!
