2. In Sociology Department Office - two weeks before defense (add at least two days to make corrections after defense - 4/5/2002
3. In hands of committee (be sure that ALL members of committee have time to react to thesis and you have time to make changes before submitting thesis to Departmental Office)
2. Check your page numbering. Preliminary pages are those pages that come before the introduction, which is Chapter 1. These pages, in order, are as follows: the initial blank page, the title page, the signature page, the acknowledgements, the table of contents, the list of tables, the list of figures, and the abstract. All preliminary pagers are numbered with lower-case Roman numerals centered at the bottom of the page. The title page and signature page have no numbers so the acknowledgements page begins with "iii." Hindu-Arabic numerals are used for the rest of the pages. The first page of each chapter is numbered in the center of the bottom of the page. Succeeding pages of the chapter are numbered in the upper right corner. This procedure applies to the appendices and references as well as to the six primary chapters.
3. Check to see that pages in Table of Contents, List of Tables, and List of Figures correspond with appropriate pages in the text.
4. Check to see that every citation is found in the References and that no references exist for which there is no citation in the text. Be sure that multiple authors are all listed in the first citation of a reference but that the primary author and "et al." are used for succeeding citations with more than two authors.
5. Run a word check on "this" to be sure that you have used the
word only as a demonstrative adjective and not as a pronoun.
2. The final copy of the paper should be run on 20-weight, 100% bond paper. (A watermark should be visible on the paper.) This paper is available at the College Heights Bookstore. It is usually sold in packs of 100 sheets. Allowing for some mistakes, you may need to purchase additional paper.
3. Your first version of the completed paper will usually be returned from the Graduate College within two weeks. Make all corrections very carefully. Then you may print the theses on the prescribed paper. Take the original copy to a commercial place, such as Kinko's, to make the additional copies. Those additional copies do not need to be made on bond paper.
4. Take four copies, along with the original, to the Graduate College (one for the Graduate College, one for the library, one for the Sociology Department, and one for yourself). The University will pay for the binding of three of those copies. Get a form from the departmental office associate to vouch for the payment for binding of the departmental copy. Take that form with you when you take the copies to the Graduate College.
5. Make a copy of your thesis for each member of your thesis committee.
Most people, therefore, will need to make a total of seven copies from
the original thesis (four for the Graduate College and three for the thesis
committee members). If the department head is a member of the committee,
he or she may not wish to have a copy in addition to the departmental one.
Check with her or him. Copies for your committee members can be bound in
covers quite inexpensively at the place where you run your copies.
2. If you did not complete your thesis during the semester in which you originally registered for it, make sure that your thesis chair turns in a change of grade card for those credits.
