Sociology 501 - Fall 2003

Course Objectives
This course should provide assistance to the beginning instructor in using ideas generated in Soc. 500.  It should offer an opportunity to expand understanding of the teaching-learning process.

Course Requirements
 1. Reading and discussing short readings from Tomorrow's Professors
 2. Constructing a unit test  (This should be submitted to the instructor
    before it is duplicated for students.)
 3. Running a test item analysis
 4. Constructing other unit tests and final test  (These should be
    submitted to the instructor before they are duplicated for students.)
 5. Designing and carrying out an out-of-class written assignment  (Make extra copies of
    the directions and some of the student papers so that we may discuss them in class.)
 6. Designing and carrying out an in-class activity or out-of-class activity  (Write out
    directions for distribution to the class and the instructor.)
 7. Videotaping the teaching of one classmate  (Portions of this tape will be selected by the
    person taped for viewing by the class.)
 8. Conferring with the instructor after each of two to four observations by the instructor.
 9. Attending two CTL workshops  (Viewing of videotapes may not be
    substituted for this activity.)
10. Teaching a single concept to the seminar group
11. Sitting in on two class sessions of Introductory Sociology taught by
    experienced teachers  (Turn in a half-page summary of what you
    learned, or discuss the observation with the 501 instructor.)
12. Turning in a short course evaluation at the end of the semester
