We were fortunate enough to have Jon Parker, student recruiter and administrator at McWhorter School of Pharmacy ( Samford University ) in Birmingham , Alabama . Important items of discussion were:
McWhorter's academic requirements and curriculum allow you to: -qualify to set for license in any state -prepare to go into any area Pharmacy of your interest Students are taught by those who are licensed pharmacist and who are experienced in their field (38/40 professors) $22,000 per year 92.4% graduate in 4 years 98.7% pass the national license examination the first time taking the exam Labs, classes and facilities are equipped with the newest technology (each student given their own PDA) Admit 120 students per year ( » 1000 applicants/year) View GPA and PCAT as to who will get invited for an interview -GPA: 3.25 ³ in math and sciences 3.52 average admitted last year -PCAT: 40 ³ good 70 ³ competitive 66 percentile average accepted last year Placement/rotation sights in Kentucky , Tennessee , Montana , Japan , South Korea , (working on China ) that you have opportunity to visit **Interview** (2 ½ -3 hours max) Interview » 300 students Agenda: meet with Jon, give overview of the day ® first 20 minute interview ® break ® second 20 minute interview ® current Pharmacy student gives tour of campus ® write post-interview essay (2 short paragraphs) based on 2 questions pulled from the interview (45 minute time limit) **Post-Interview** -conduct 2 weeks of interviews—committee meeting on Friday and will decide who to accept, reject or place on waiting list (40 students placed on the list)—applicant will know their decision within 3 weeks of interview
Employment, job shadowing and volunteering all count as pharmacy experience. If have 7 months ³ of experience, they add 0.1 to your GPA when reviewing your application. Add 0.2 to your GPA if you are a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician **PharmCAS** -require Letter of Recommendation from non-academic (preferably a pharmacist you have worked under, if no pharmacy experience then someone you've worked under) and academic -if you aren't receiving a BS degree, must have ACT scores sent; 21 minimum score. 25-30—one category and 30 ³ another category **Suggest that PharmCAS and supplemental (found on their website) application be submitted by Thanksgiving** -December 15—academic window opens to allow you to update your fall semester courses. **Send PharmCAS a new transcript for fall semester classes** -- FEBRUARY 1, 2007 ® Samford Deadline (for August 07 class) **Organic I - only class REQUIRED to have a grade for in order to apply ** MUST REPORT SOCIAL SECURITY # (how relate you to PCAT scores) -January PCAT is ONLY accepted, if NEVER taken the test before—nothing else allowed after the 2-1-07 deadline -Only view your best PCAT score
Is priority given to those with a BS degree?? They are given extra consideration. They feel these students have accomplished a higher level of academic achievement. 55% had BS degrees that were admitted last year.
