Doing Business In and With Mexico

This program is designed to give students experience in international trade. Student teams will research various sectors of the Kentucky economy. They will make presentations to student groups, chambers of commerce and businesses in three Mexican important cities – Guadalajara, Queretaro, and Monterrey. The course involves lectures from the Kentucky Trade Office in Guadalajara and Frankfort, a pre-departure cultural orientation and survival Spanish session. Students will visit the following partner schools: Universidad Panamericana in Guadalajara , ITESM in Guadalajara and Queretaro; Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey and Universidad Autonoma de Queretaro.
Planned cultural excursions include: Ballet Folkloric in Guadalajara; Tour to city of Tequila and visit to the Jose Cuervo factory; walking tours of Guadalajara, Queretaro, and Monterrey; visit the aqueduct, the site of the signing of the Mexican Constitution, and the Chapel of the Bells (site of the execution of Maximilian) in Queretaro, and start with business visits in Puerto Vallarta.
Students completing the course will (1) have a heightened awareness of global markets and how they work; (2) better understand import and export procedures in the setting of the NAFTA countries; (3) better understand how cultural difference affect international business; and (4) have a better understanding of the history and culture of Mexico and the Mexican people. Teaching the course in Mexico will allow easy access to speakers and fieldtrips which will enhance the learning experience and allow students to make presentations to Mexican business and community leaders. It will also expose students to business and social environments with cultural differences

What is the cost?
The total estimated cost per student is $2,500. This includes air transportation from Nashville, housing, local transportation, entrance fees to required programs, return air transportation, and three hours credit. The final cost depends on the cost of air fare and exchange rates when final arrangements are made.
You should check with the office of financial aid concerning the application of your award to the winter term.
Where will we stay?
Housing is in hotels. You will share a room with another student.
Does financial aid apply to this program?
This program is considered the same as any other academic term at WKU. Students eligible for student financial aid for the Winter Term may apply those funds towards this program.
If I cannot attend, may I get a refund?
A full refund (including the $250 deposit) will be given if the program is cancelled or if the cost of the program exceeds the estimated cost at the time of your acceptance. For other withdrawals, refunds will be given in the following amounts (total due less $250 deposit less actual expenses incurred). 75% refund until November 29. 50% refund after November 29.
How do I sign up?
Complete the application for the program (link found below or available in the Ford College of Business, Economics Department, and Study Abroad Office). Return it, along with a letter of recommendation from a faculty member to the Gordon Ford College of Business, 445 Grise Hall or mail it to the address on the application.
Do I need a passport?
Yes, you will need a passport. If you do not have a passport, go to http://travel.state.gov and apply as soon as possible.
