Section I: Economics of Land Use

 

Readings: Chapters 1-10 Urban Economics by Arthur O Sullivan

 

Site visits: Wellington Botanical Gardens, Christ Church Botanical Gardens, Queenstown Botanical Gardens, Melbourne Botanical Gardens, St. Kilda Beach, Sydney Botanical Gardens, Bondi Beach, Manly Beach

 

Section II: Economic History of Oceana

 

Readings: To be provided through economic history resources on www.eh.net

 

Site visits: Te Papa Museum, Wellington Museum, Melbourne Museum, Sydney Opera House

 

Section III: Current Oceanic Markets

 

Readings: Articles regarding the wine and beer markets of Oceana

 

Site Visits: Winery Tour in Queenstown, Foster’s Brewing Headquarters in Melbourne, and Australian Securities Exchange in Sydney

 

Grading

Two exams:                60%

Research Paper           30%

Journal                                    10%

 

Exams

Students will take their first exam on the plane ride to New Zealand.  It will cover the ten chapters in O’Sullivan’s text.  Students will take their final exam on their last day in Sydney.  It will cover sections II and III of the course.

 

Research Paper

Students will be required to do a 10-15 page research paper on a topic relevant to the course.  The paper is due before the class leaves the US.

 

Journal

Students will be required to keep a journal documenting what they have learned on their site visits and how their in class material has been fortified by their travels to various cities.
